Lifescan has long been at the forefront of providing early diagnosis for those illnesses where early treatment can make a difference and since 2003 has provided such a service in the diagnosis of heart disease, lung cancer, colon cancer, aortic aneurysm, skin cancer and osteoporosis. Now, Lifescan is providing a new service to detect the early signs of dementia including Alzheimer’s.
Previously, there had been little benefit in detecting dementia at an early stage, however in March this year, NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) published revised guidelines regarding the treatment of those people diagnosed with this illness. Previously, drug treatment was only recommended for those in the more advanced stages of the disease. However, the revised guidelines recommend that those diagnosed with the early stages of the illness should also be allowed the same treatment, to help slow down the progression of symptoms.
In response to this significant change, Lifescan is delighted to announce the introduction of the Lifescan Memory Check, a new service aimed at detecting the early stages of dementia including Alzheimer’s. We have developed this service under the clinical guidance of a Consultant Psychiatrist who has worked extensively in the UK for the provision of screening and care for those suffering from dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
Over 1 in 14 individuals, aged 65 and over, in the UK are currently suffering from memory loss or dementia, but few people realise that early diagnosis really can help to make the difference.
