What is CT Scanning?

Since 2002 there has been a technological revolution in the field of CT scanning. Multislice scanners are now able to perform previously impossible or time-consuming examinations in a few minutes.

This new technology provides a powerful diagnostic tool capable of the early diagnosis of three main causes of death, namely coronary artery disease, lung and colon cancer. The early diagnosis of these conditions provides an unparalleled opportunity for early intervention when cure or prevention is possible.

CT imaging is particularly useful because it can show several types of tissue - lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels with great clarity. Using specialist equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, Consultant Radiologists can diagnose cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease and musculoskeletal disorders - even in individuals not displaying any symptoms.

Lifescan is the first UK CT scanning provider to be established with the specific aim of offering a range of diagnostic and health assessment services.

Would a Lifescan CT health check be right for me?

Individuals who have a family history of heart disease, stroke or cancer, those with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, smokers or previous smokers and those with a sedentary or stressful lifestyle may benefit from Lifescan's services.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to have a Lifescan health check?

Generally speaking, no. For people under the age of 40 or those requiring a specialised scan it will be necessary to obtain a letter from a GP or Consultant.

What happens during the scan?

The Radiographer will go through the whole process before starting the scan. You will lie on a table and be asked to hold your breath as you pass through a large open ring. During this time hundreds of high resolution images of your body will be gathered which our Consultant Radiologists will review in order to prepare your personal report.

When will I get my results?

Following your scan, your images will be reviewd in detail by one of our Consultant Radiologists. They will prepare your personal report which will then be completed and sent out to you. This detailed written report will usually be sent to you approximately three to five working days after your appointment.

Is my information confidential?

All of your results and images are completely private and secure. Lifescan will not release any of your information to anyone, including your GP, without your permission and signed consent.

What should I wear on the day of my scan?

For most people it is possible to wear everyday clothing, as our Radiographers will work around what is comfortable for you. If possible it is helpful to try and avoid metal fastenings as this can affect the clarity of the imaging.
